In the early 1800's Ravenfield Hall, was the seat of the Rev. William Hedges. The population was 187. The Church a perpetual curacy, dedicated to St. James, in the Deanery of Doncaster,the patron, was the Archdeacon of York. It was formerly a chapel to Mexborough
